Movie Theaters Are Having A Rough Year…

2025 is off to a slow start at the box office, even with a Captain America movie and multiple big budget original movies hitting theaters. After 2024 was the first year since 2020 that saw box office sales go down, 2025 needed a better start. But audiences have truly been conditioned to wait for movies to stream or watch at home, so this is a natural consequence! I love the movie theater. It’s my comfort zone. The place I can truly shut my brain off for 2 hours and dive into another world. The studios need to rediscover that same love for theaters and work with the theaters to extend theatrical windows and give them a chance to survive. We need studio executives who care about the art form and the world of movies and not just shareholder profits. I have hopes that 2025 can turn around, but I have a feeling the major drivers of ticket sales will be smaller indie films and not the billion dollar blockbuster the box office needs. Outside of Superman, I’m not sure anything this year has a chance at $1 billion, or even close to that. We shall see!
