Or can they? I had some fun testing out different ways of growing lettuce. I set up two wicking beds and two kratky totes. One of the hydroponic setups and one of the soil beds had Super Greensand added to them as a source of organic silica. The wicking beds had an unintended design flaw that gave the plants insufficient water. However, germination and seedling growth was better in the bed with Super Greensand. I think this is likely due to improved moisture retention from the silica.
