They Were Almost Home | The Sultana Story (My Family’s Story)

Today, I’m beginning something that means a great deal to me — telling the story of the Sultana, the deadliest maritime disaster in U.S. history. On April 27, 1865, just days after the end of the Civil War and the assassination of President Lincoln, the steamboat Sultana exploded on the Mississippi River. On board were thousands of Union soldiers — many of them newly released from prison camps — finally on their way home. They were almost home. This story is personal for me. My 3rd great-grandfather was among those soldiers. He survived the war, endured imprisonment, and was on that journey home when he lost his life in the disaster. His son survived, and I’ll be sharing more of his story as this series continues. In this video, I’m introducing the Sultana story and beginning a visual build to help us sit with this history.
