l was never taught about the Sultana disaster, and chances are… most of you weren’t either. In this series, I’m building a steamboat while sharing the story of the Sultana — one of the deadliest maritime disasters in U.S. history — and my personal connection to it. My 3rd great-grandfather was a Union veteran who survived the Civil War, endured Cahaba prison, and was finally on his way home when he died on the Sultana in 1865. This series is my way of slowing down, building something meaningful, and honoring a story that deserves to be remembered.
