A couple of weeks ago, I did a thing that a lot of people hate seeing: I put a Bigsby on my Gibson ES-335. Bigsbys have always had that reputation for knocking guitars out of tune—“brave man taking that on stage” and all that—but my experience has honestly been the opposite. In this video I run through what changed on the 335 after the install: the guitar rings out a bit more thanks to that extra string length behind the bridge, the feel/tension shifts so bends feel like you’ve got a bit more to work with, and the sustain stayed properly respectable (no compression—just my Nano Cortex into a Two-Rock style capture). Then I put it up against a Strat-style trem to show the real-world differences. The Strat system gives you more “options” (upward pulls, warbles, removable arm), but I also show how quickly it can drift—especially that classic G-string “critter” behaviour—compared to the Bigsby when you use it like a Bigsby (musical wobble, not dive bombs). The big trade-off? Weight. My 335 went from nicely balanced to seriously body-heavy—roughly +2 lb—and the holes mean it’s not a casual, reversible mod. If you want the look, the vibe, and that subtle tonal/feel shift, it’s absolutely worth considering—just be honest about how you play and what you’re willing to commit to.
