this great optical compressor pedal here!

The Iris is an optical compressor that’s built around speed and simplicity: a volume control and a three-way compression switch. In my demo it goes from transparent and subtle to very, very serious compression, and it does a nice job of taming top end—especially handy with a Tele for that percussive, clicky country thing.

Pros

  • +Very easy to dial in with simple controls
  • +Three preset-style compression levels from subtle to heavy
  • +Top-end limiting can help brighten an amp without harshness
  • +Volume knob can compensate for level changes or push an amp

Cons

  • -Noticeable volume variance when switching between compression modes
  • -Less fine-tuning than full-parameter compressors (by design)
