In this video I go through the most common mistakes I see when people buy winter boots—and why so many “-40°C” boots still give you cold feet. I’m Matti, and together with Stina I live year-round above the Arctic Circle in Jokkmokk, guiding dog sledding tours and spending most winter days outside. I see what guests arrive with, and very often it’s the kind of boot the shops in the south try to sell you—boots that look warm, but fail fast when you’re actually out in snow, wind and real cold. I explain what matters in practice: don’t buy boots too small (you need room for air and wool layers and you must still be able to waggle your toes), and don’t ignore the toe box—especially if it’s too low and compresses insulation when it gets cold. I also talk about “city fluffy” boots that belong on asphalt, not in deep snow, and why moisture management is a huge deal on overnight trips. For tours and camping I want removable liners so I can dry them every night. And finally: don’t trust temperature ratings from brands—use your head, choose boots for your activity, and build warmth with space, air and dry layers.
