Heading out alone for a winter night can feel strange the first time—lonely, maybe dangerous, and often a bit uncomfortable. In this video I take my dog team out for a simple solo overnight in my hot tent here in Swedish Lapland (around 10°C below zero and damp), and I talk through the most common mistakes I see people do with solo winter camping—and how you can avoid them. This is not about breaking records or “surviving a storm”. It’s about making your first (or tenth) solo night realistic, safe, and actually enjoyable. First, I explain why you should start small: stay close to home, learn your equipment, and treat every trip as education—tiny steps forward. Then I go into three big mistakes: choosing a too-small “solo” tent for winter (you need space for bulky gear, more time inside, and to avoid your sleeping bag touching wet tent walls), forgetting comfort items (chair, good coffee, chocolate, a proper dinner—make it cozy), and letting your imagination run wild in the dark forest (every sound becomes a bear, a murderer… or a troll). In the morning I show how we handle condensation with heat and ventilation, pack up, and head home—no trolls, no aliens, just a calm night out.
