Hey, Pet. In winter I don’t use one head torch — I use a small system. In this video I’m out on a 4-day dog sled trip here in Swedish Lapland (23 dogs, guests sleeping, me putting jackets on the dogs) and I explain why the “best headlamp” is not about chasing the most lumens. For me it’s about beam pattern (focused vs wide), a battery solution that works in the cold (rechargeable or swap-able), and a lamp that’s sturdy enough to survive real guiding life. For traveling in the dark — dog sledding, snowmobile, hiking, navigation — I want a narrow, focused beam so I can see trail marks and pick up details far away. That’s why I use the Lupine Piko with the battery pack on the back: I can unclick and swap batteries fast, keep spares warm in my pocket, and just keep moving. Then I always carry a smaller lamp as backup and for camp life: something like the Nitecore UT27 (or my older NU33) that’s easy to wear as a necklace in the sleeping bag when I wake up to pee. If you film a lot, I really like having both warm and cold light options. My simple takeaway: choose the lamp that fits what you actually do — travel, tent, or filming — and don’t buy “the best of the best” for the wrong job.
