In this Behind The Music interview, we sit down with City Builders, a Toronto-based pop project led by Grace Turner, as she steps into a new era, going from duo to solo and redefining her identity as an artist. Grace opens up about the deeply personal journey behind her debut EP Healing Revenge, sharing how heartbreak, healing, and self-discovery shaped the project. We talk about the transition to going solo, the emotional weight of creating during major life changes, and how getting her heart broken at the end of recording unexpectedly gave the songs new meaning. She also takes us behind the scenes of making the EP alongside collaborators like AL-P, diving into the creative process, the story behind “Heartthrob,” and what it looks like to turn pain into something playful, honest, and empowering. About This Video

In this episode of Behind The Music, I sit down with Grace Turner (City Builders) to talk about stepping into a new era—going from a duo to a solo project, and what it actually feels like when the “band identity” suddenly becomes your identity. We get into where the name City Builders came from (yes, Minecraft gets a mention), how she’s been singing and writing since she was a kid, and the moment touring with USS (while doing videography) helped her see the work ethic behind a real music career. We go deep on her debut EP, Healing Revenge—how writing an absurd amount of songs (like 80) helped the story reveal itself, and how the emotional core of the project lives in that tension between rage and love. Grace breaks down why the title clicked early, how the EP holds angry alt moments, flirty pop, and heartfelt ballads all at once, and how the cover photo happened almost by accident after spotting a “gross couch” and just creating for fun. One of the most intimate parts of our convo is hearing how she got dumped on the last day of recording, and how that heartbreak gave the songs a deeper meaning—especially “Learning to Miss You,” which started as a friendship-breakup song and became a comfort place. We also talk promo as an indie artist (tight budgets, lots of time, storytelling on social), her love for “Heartthrob,” and what she wishes people could see behind the music: the studio magic… and maybe the 2am crying-in-bed songwriting sessions.
