* * * Why is wetlands important for Iceland? * * * Wetlands provide habitat for thousands of species of aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals. Wetlands are valuable for flood protection, water quality improvement, shoreline erosion control, natural products, recreation, and aesthetics. Wetlands connected to underground sources of water are important because they retain water and provide time for it to filter down into aquifers. Groundwater provides water for drinking, irrigation, and keeping water flowing in our streams, rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Wetlands play a vital role in the health of the environment.
