* * * Exploring Sundhnúkagígar Volcanos after all the Eruptions. Now we wait for the next one to Explode again * * * On the evening of 18 December 2023, a volcanic eruption began near Hagafell, about 4km (2.5 miles) northeast of Grindavík, following a series of small earthquakes that began at around 21:00 local time. The Icelandic Meteorological Office stated that the eruption stemmed from a fissure with a length of about 3.5 km, with lava flowing at a rate of around 100 to 200 cubic metres per second. An Icelandic Civil Defence official told RUV that the eruption had happened quickly and appeared to be "quite a large event". Following an earthquake swarm warning in the early hours of 14 January 2024, those that had returned to the town of Grindavík were re-evacuated shortly before further fissure eruptions, with lava entering the town and destroying three structures. This eruption only lasted two days; however, as of 17 January 2024, there is still measurable magma influx below Sundhnúkar and Grindavík, which meant that the possibility of additional fissures opening in the coming days remained elevated. The next eruption commenced in the early morning of 8th February 2024. This eruption was close to the site of the most recent event by Hagafell. The initial fissure stretched 3 kilometers, directing the lava flows westward. The lava flowed rapidly and reached the road leading to the Blue Lagoon, one of Iceland's most famous tourist attractions. The hotel had been previously evacuated, and the spa was temporarily closed. From a geological perspective, these eruptions have been invaluable in understanding the behavior of so-called “shield volcanoes, " known for their gentle slopes and effusive eruptions. The study of the lava and its composition has shed light on the mantle source and the tectonic activities beneath the Earth's surface. The magma we see in the most recent eruptions is distinctly different from the materials of previous eruptions. The last volcanic activity here occurred between 1210 and 1240, concluding a four centuries of active volcanic phase. At that time, a different type of magma caused the prolonged volcanic activity. The question now is, what capabilities does this completely different magma type possess? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - *** TIMEFRAME *** 00:00 View from Volcano Sýlingarfell volcano To Grindavík village, Þorbjörn Mountain, Svartsengi Power Plant and Blue Lagoon Spa. 00:48 Walking to the Eruption site. 00:34 View of the Lava flow. 01:34 Continue the walking to the Eruption site. 01:49 Sundhnúkagígar Eruption Site 03:50 View to Stóra-Skógfell 04:02 Sýlingarfell and the view from the top to Þorbjörn Mountain, Svartsengi Power Plant and Blue Lagoon Spa. 04:45 Sundhnúkagígar Eruption Site 02:37 Starting the Walk back home 06:16 Fallen rocks from Sýlingarfell (be careful out there) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - if you are a fellow video creator, let me support you too. – Please watch the video in 2K because the compression is so high in HD that it degrades the image quality - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thank you for watching.
