Iceland LXXI - Finding Pétursborg - Winter │ Part 167

* * * Do NOT under any circumstances walk this path alone in the wintertime - it’s suicidal * * * WARNING - The last person who got lost in the field was found after 30 years - so please think about it before you try it. There is a lot of Active Bombs on this trail from World War II as they used it as a practice field and they fell into the moss without blowing up. Yes, I went there alone as I am familiar with this deadly Lava field and I had backup from people in Vogar who monitored me every step of the way, except if I would get blown up as it is not known where the bombs are... Pétursborg stands on the edge of Huldugjá. The sheepfold is an old sheep fort from Tumakoti in Vogum, named after Pétri Andréssyni (1839 – 1904) a farmer there, who is said to have built the sheepfold single-handedly. It is oval in shape and the east wall is mostly collapsed. The length of the sheepfold is 6-7 m, width 4-5 m, wall thickness about 50 cm, height 180 cm and the door faces southeast. At Pétursborg to the north and east, there are two old houses and the third is quite new. From Pétursborg there is a beautiful view over the heath to Hrafnagjá, Snorrastaðatjarnir and Háabjalla.
