* * * “Flags of our Fathers” Black Beach in Iceland * * * Director Clint Eastwood used Iceland´s black beach Stóra-Sandvík and volcanic craters as stand-in for island fortress Iwo Jima in his movie, based on James Bradleys bestelling WWII epic "The Flags of Our Fathers (2006)" - telling the tale of the six flag raisers on mount Suribachi and “Letters from Iwo Jima” (2006) Key scenes, such as the landing of the marines and the fight for the crater that is the famous Mt. Suribachi, are being filmed on Reykjanes, the volcanic peninsula southwest of Reykjavik. I’m documenting this Black Beach because soon they will start to drill for hot water at or near this beautiful place for hot water to be used for the nearby Power Plant.
