International Trade – The Challenges Ahead

Trade is currently at the forefront of public policy, not just in the European Union but across the globe. The recent shift in US trade policy, the state-led Chinese economic model, and the intensifying competition between the major global powers, present significant risks for the global economy, with major ramifications for the EU and Irish economy, its companies and its citizens. Trade and economic security are therefore key priorities for the European Commission and Member States alike for years to come. As Ireland prepares for its upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2026, this is a critical moment to reassess matters of economic resilience and competitiveness, noting Ireland’s significant exposure to international trade and investment. Within this context the European Commission and the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) are co-organising a conference on Trade and Economic Security, on 3 October 2025 in Dublin, Ireland. It will focus on competitiveness and economic security and Europe’s global partners. This conference will feature an address from Maroš Šefčovič, EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, and from Simon Harris TD, Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Defence. The panels will include Irish and global experts.
