We make videos about technical things all the time. Pretty hard, actually. We spent the last 6 months trying to wrap our heads around the numbers. Lumen’s, Candela, Batteries, Burn rate, throw distance, and we didn’t even get into durability, temperature, or water resistance testing. At HowNot2, we carry a variety of headlamps for caving, climbing and general use. We grabbed one of each and sent them off to the nice folks over at Torque Test Channel. They have made 15+ videos testing all sorts of lights. They put our headlamps on their magic box and gave us Lumen and Candela numbers. TTC does lots of entertaining test on cheap amazon flashlights that make impossible claims. Unlike those, all the lights in our test are fairly close to the ratings they claim. Even so there were some frustrating discrepancies with runtime, brightness and weight. We recorded all the data in a spreadsheet for anyone who wants to nerd out. Our takeaway: Do your own tests on the headlamp you have before you trust it with your life. You don’t need any fancy equipment, just some patience.
