Why Should You Quarantine Your Houseplants

Today I want to talk about quarantining your houseplants, I mentioned it briefly in a previous video and a few people asked me what it was and to explain more about it. SO.. When you buy a new houseplant and bring it home it’s normal that you would want to put it in pride of place in your living room or with your other plants, but whenever you bring in a new plant there is always the chance that you are bringing with it more than you thought! There could be soil-based pests and diseases, you could have eggs under the leaves, basically, your new plant could bring with it pests that could harm your other houseplants, so it’s a good idea to quarantine your new plant separately for a period of 40 days in a room with no other houseplants just to have the opportunity to give it a good look over, check under the leaves, pay attention to it and see if there are any fungus gnats coming out of the soil etc, this way you can spot potential problems before it gets a chance to infect your other plants with whatever it has. If you see fungus gnats for example you can keep them in that room with the door closed while you treat it, which will be much easier and really not a problem if they haven’t spread to your other plants, it would be a simple matter to treat them with Mosquito Bits for example that seems to be the best remedy on YouTube and I have found it pretty good myself so the isolation gives you options if you find an issue if it’s still happy and healthy after 40 days then you can move it to wherever you want it in your home knowing that it’s not going to infect your other houseplants. So that’s all there is to it, very easy to do but something that many people don’t think about when buying new plants, you only need one bad experience and you will soon make sure you quarantine all your new plants!
