Supermicro SAS Backplane...

For the internal 16-drive add-on, I used simple backplanes that take Molex power and break out to standard connectors. The main thing to remember is that even if the connectors look like SATA, you still need a controller/expander that supports SAS if you’re running SAS disks.

You'll be taken to Ebay to complete your purchase.

Pros

  • +Simple power and cabling for adding internal drive groups
  • +Works with SAS drives when connected to a SAS-capable controller/expander

Cons

  • -Cabling can get tight inside a packed 4U chassis
  • -Not as clean as a single SFF-8087 output style backplane
