Netgear WAX610...

I’ve been running a pair of the Netgear WAX610s and the performance has been solid and reliable, which is the main thing I care about in a home lab AP. You get a 2.5GbE uplink, PoE (802.3at), WPA3/WPA2 options, and the local web UI has the configuration flexibility that was missing on the WAX214.

Buy on Amazon

You'll be taken to Amazon to complete your purchase.

Pros

  • +Solid, reliable performance in my multi-AP setup
  • +2.5GbE uplink port
  • +PoE (802.3at) support with low real-world power draw (~6–7W in my case)
  • +Local management option (no cloud required)
  • +Supports VLAN tagging per SSID and multiple SSIDs (up to 8)
  • +More advanced settings than the WAX214, including wireless bridging

Cons

  • -Older firmware can block automated upgrades (may require a manual update first)
  • -Cloud features like mesh aren’t available if you stick to local management
  • -I expected an SSH option in the UI and didn’t see it (needs more investigation)
