Netgear WAX214...

I tested the Netgear WAX214 because on paper it checks a lot of boxes for a homelab: WiFi 6 (802.11ax), WPA3 support, and PoE power on a compact access point. Setup is straightforward and it supports multiple SSIDs with VLAN tagging, but the management feature set feels overly basic and some important controls (like transmit power) are oddly hidden behind a CLI-only “green mode.”

Buy on Amazon

You'll be taken to Amazon to complete your purchase.

Pros

  • +WiFi 6 (802.11ax) support
  • +WPA3 (WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode available)
  • +PoE support plus optional 12V barrel power
  • +Up to four SSIDs with VLAN tagging options
  • +Compact design with wall/ceiling mounting options

Cons

  • -Transmit power control is blocked in the GUI unless you disable a hidden CLI “green mode”
  • -Green mode re-enables after reboot, so changes don’t persist
  • -Configuration options feel very basic for a “business” access point
  • -Observed intermittent client disconnect/reconnect behavior during testing
