I upgraded to an LSI 9217 4i4e because I wanted internal SAS for the CSE-836 backplane and external SAS to keep feeding my downstream JBODs. It’s also PCIe Gen3, which is a nice step up from the older Gen2 controller I had sitting next to the GPU in the 1U box.

Pros
- +One internal + one external SAS port (great for backplane + JBOD chaining)
- +PCIe Gen3 controller (step up from older Gen2 HBAs)
Cons
- -Adds heat near GPUs if placed too close
- -Cable routing can impact airflow if you’re not careful
