CRS309 Switch...

The MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S+IN is my go-to recommendation when you want a cheap, reliable way to add 10Gb fiber to a homelab. It’s passively cooled (no fans), has 8 SFP+ ports, and SwOS makes basic switching and VLAN work pretty straightforward once you get used to MikroTik’s style. Just don’t buy it expecting full-speed Layer 3 routing—use it as a Layer 2 switch.

Pros

  • +8x SFP+ ports for affordable 10Gb fiber switching
  • +Passively cooled and quiet (no internal fans)
  • +SwOS web UI is simpler than RouterOS for Layer 2 use
  • +Includes rack ears for a standard 19-inch rack
  • +Detailed SFP diagnostics (temp/voltage/TX/RX power)

Cons

  • -Not enough processing power for 10Gb Layer 3 routing
  • -10GBase-T RJ45 SFP+ modules can overheat due to passive cooling
  • -PoE-in is not true power redundancy (can cause interruption on switchover)
