Americans might equate it to the comprehensive exam that you take during your programme and the point of the transfer exam is similar: to have your aptitude as a researcher, your knowledge of your topic, and the value of your PhD project, reviewed, questioned, and challenged in an oral viva exam. Spoiler ALERT: I passed! BUT! It was NOT what I was expecting....!! Not for any reason other than I'm a space cadet and deluded myself into thinking it wouldn't be too hard. Clearly, that was a self-preservation / sub-conscious decision made subconsciously because if I'd known how tough some parts of the exam would be, I honestly might have not turned up 😂🤯🫠 In all seriousness, the exam was a serious learning curve. My examiner asked superb questions that really helped me think about my project in new ways, and gave me confidence for the upcoming weeks and months as I continue to carry out research. In the second half of this video, I share some of the experiences from the exam itself, including the types of questions that were asked so if you have a research viva coming up some of the tips that are included might be of some use to you! Thanks so much for watching 😍 Hugs from NYC, Holly xoxox __________________________________ Time Stamps 00:00 - 00:40 - Intro 00:40 - 02:55 - What Is the PhD Transfer Exam? 02:55 - 03:05 - Make Up Montage 03:05 - 05:00 - PowerPoint Prep and Tips! 05:00 - 06:10 - THE EXAM 06:10 - 06:50 - THE RESULTS 06:50 - 07:23 - The Next Day... About This Video

In this PhD study vlog, I’m taking you with me through my transfer exam (if you’re in the US, think comps-ish vibes): an oral viva where your project, your knowledge, and your “are you actually a researcher?” readiness gets properly reviewed and challenged. I explain what the transfer exam is, how I prepped, and the very real moment where I realised I’d slightly deluded myself into thinking it wouldn’t be that hard (self-preservation, honestly). Spoiler: I passed — but it was not what I expected. I share how I approached my PowerPoint prep, what it felt like to be in the exam itself, and then the next-day reflections I wish I’d heard earlier. The big takeaways are basically: you’re being examined as a researcher, not a student; writing is everything (yes, I am still screaming); and you need to be able to talk clearly about your theoretical and conceptual frameworks without spiralling. The questions were tough but genuinely superb — the kind that make you see your project in a new way and (weirdly) leave you feeling more confident going forward.
