Teaching your little one basic sign language will alleviate so much frustration for both parties. Think of the things that they do most frequently or the things you do with them the most frequently like read, food, play and teach them those things. Teach them as the "event" is happening; every time and they'll catch on really easily. Drew's first word was milk because at the time he was breastfed, so every time he would want to latch on or I would latch him onto my boobie, I would say "Milk" along with the sign for milk. Since he was drinking milk so frequently, he had a ton of practice and caught on to that sign in a matter of days. Be patient with your kids. Don't yell, fuss, or hit them if they aren't getting it right away, just stick with it and some signs may take longer than others to learn, but once they get it, they'll be able to tell you what is wrong... for the most part, and boom! They may not sign the "right way," but you'll know what they mean. I think you should at least teach them until they start talking, but definitely longer if you can.
