The Herron School of Art + Design Class of 2026 gathered at the historic Madam Walker Legacy Center for an afternoon celebrating achievement, creativity, community, and the beginning of new journeys. The ceremony opened with a live performance from the Circle City Sidewalk Stompers marching band, continuing one of Herron’s long-standing graduation traditions. Dean Greg Hull welcomed graduates, families, friends, faculty, staff, and virtual attendees while reflecting on the significance of the Madam Walker Legacy Center and its place in Indianapolis history. He also recognized the families, loved ones, faculty, and staff who supported students throughout their academic journeys. The keynote address was delivered by Professor Emeritus Craig McDaniel, who spoke about creativity, courage, uncertainty, and the importance of shaping the future with intention. Drawing connections between history, personal growth, and the role of artists and designers in society, McDaniel encouraged graduates to continue creating, communicating, and leading with purpose as they move into the next stage of their lives and careers. The ceremony also included the presentation of Herron’s 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award to Catherine “Kathy” Cunningham. Kathy reflected on her experiences as an artist, educator, mentor, and longtime supporter of Herron, sharing advice with graduates about staying true to themselves, building relationships within the arts community, and continuing to nurture their creativity throughout life. Graduate students were recognized during the master’s hooding ceremony led by Shannon McCullough, followed by the recognition of undergraduate graduates from across Herron’s creative disciplines. Throughout the event, students, families, faculty, and staff celebrated together with cheers, applause, and moments of reflection on the paths that led to graduation day. Student speaker Makenna Murphy shared a personal reflection on finding her place within Herron and the importance of staying true to oneself while pursuing creative passions. Her remarks highlighted the collaborative and supportive environment students experienced during their time at Herron and encouraged graduates to continue leading with authenticity as they move forward into their futures. Michelle Winkelman closed the alumni address by welcoming graduates into Herron’s alumni community and encouraging them to remain connected with the school, faculty, staff, and one another as they begin the next chapter of their professional and creative journeys. The celebration concluded with final remarks from Dean Hull, group photographs with graduates and faculty, and a reception for graduates, families, friends, and guests. The event reflected the creativity, resilience, and sense of community that define the Herron experience.
