The Lower Rio Grande Valley is well known in the birding community for having a host of specialty birds like Green Jays, Great Kiskadees, Altamira Orioles, Plain Chachalacas, and more! Since it is on the border of Mexico and the United States, and it lies quite far south compared to most of the US, there are many birds who's range only extends into this small region in the US. In simpler terms, there are many birds where this is the only reliable location to see them in the United States. It's the northern most point of their range. This episode features incredible birding at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center, one of the best spots in Texas to see coastal and migratory birds. I walked the scenic boardwalks through wetlands and watched for Roseate Spoonbills, Reddish Egrets, and herons in their natural habitat. As a key stop along the Central Flyway, South Padre Island offers unbeatable opportunities to spot both resident and migrating species.
