M.2 to Quad GbE

On paper, this is a really cool idea: use an M.2 slot and a cable harness to break out into four gigabit ports for a DIY router or a hypervisor with multiple physical NICs. In practice, my unit didn’t work at all, ran extremely hot, and I suspect the poor heatsink contact may have killed it.

Pros

  • +Potentially great for DIY routers needing multiple physical Ethernet ports
  • +Uses an M.2 slot instead of a full-size PCIe slot

Cons

  • -My unit failed to work and appeared to overheat
  • -Heatsink/thermal contact seemed poor and may cause reliability issues
