The Roland TD-316 genuinely surprised me in a good way—premium feel, sharp triggering, and a seriously impressive V31 module for the money. I spent weeks on it, played all 70 kits, and it’s one of the strongest sub-2K options I’ve tried, especially if you want deep editing and a kit that’s simply fun to play.

Pros

  • +Premium build quality and solid pad feel for the price
  • +PD-12P snare is exceptionally responsive and realistic
  • +V31 module is powerful with deep customization and USB-C recording
  • +VH-10 hi-hat triggering feels sharp and accurate
  • +Compact footprint without feeling cramped

Cons

  • -Rack tom mounting is more fixed, making preferred tom angles harder to dial in
  • -Toms sound underwhelming on quite a few preset kits
  • -Kick pad can creep forward (I added Velcro) and foam can dent over time
