I really wanted to recommend the Xbox Ally — but after weeks of testing, I found deal-breakers… and one surprising fix. I really wanted to like the Xbox Ally — and honestly, it’s been one of the most confusing handhelds I’ve tested. On paper, it doesn’t make sense. Lower performance, buggy software, questionable design choices… and yet, I still recommend it — under very specific conditions. In this video, I break down my real-world experience using the Xbox Ally as a daily handheld, including build quality, triggers, ports, battery life, performance, and how it compares to the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and ROG Ally X. Where the Xbox Ally truly shines is low-TDP gaming. If you love chill games like Stardew Valley, Hades, or Hollow Knight, the battery life here is genuinely impressive. But if you’re planning to play AAA shooters, you may want to look elsewhere. The biggest surprise? Installing Bazzite / SteamOS completely transforms the Xbox Ally. It fixes many of the software issues, improves sleep reliability, and turns it into a far better console-like experience. 📖 Chapters: 00:00 Why I Wanted to Like the Xbox Ally (But Didn’t) 00:30 Xbox Ally Build Quality: The Good & The Bad 00:50 Xbox Ally Grip Comfort Is Surprisingly Great 01:15 Xbox Ally Triggers Are a Real Problem 02:05 Xbox Ally Ports & No eGPU Support Explained 02:45 Xbox Ally Software Is Way Too Buggy 04:50 Xbox Ally Sleep Mode & Button Issues 05:40 Best Games to Play on Xbox Ally 06:00 Why Xbox Ally Is Perfect for Chill Games 06:25 Xbox Ally Battery Life Is Shockingly Good 07:05 Can Xbox Ally Handle AAA Games? 07:20 Xbox Ally vs Ally X: Performance vs Price 08:10 Xbox Ally vs Other Gaming Handhelds 08:25 Xbox Ally vs Steam Deck (Windows vs Linux) 10:30 Xbox Ally vs ROG Ally (Is Cheaper Better?) 11:40 Xbox Ally vs ROG Ally X (The Real Upgrade) 12:40 Xbox Ally X vs Xbox Ally (Which Should You Buy?) 14:05 When You SHOULD Buy the Xbox Ally 14:20 Buy Xbox Ally Only If the Price Is Right 14:40 Installing Bazzite / SteamOS Changes Everything 15:45 Why You MUST Install SteamOS on Xbox Ally 16:20 My Wife’s Real Xbox Ally Experience 17:10 Final Verdict: Who the Xbox Ally Is For Let's be best friends: https://www.instagram.com/emmagine79 👍 Support the Channel: Like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell to get the latest tech insights and reviews. About This Video

I really wanted to recommend the Xbox Ally, but after weeks of daily use it ended up being one of the most confusing handhelds I’ve tested. On paper, it’s hard to justify: the performance isn’t great for the price, the software experience is buggy, and there are some design choices that genuinely annoyed me. In this video I go through the stuff you actually feel day-to-day—build quality, grip comfort, triggers (big problem), ports (and why no eGPU support matters), battery life, and how it stacks up against the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Ally X. Where the Xbox Ally surprised me is low-TDP gaming. If you’re playing chill games like Stardew Valley, Hades, or Hollow Knight, the battery life is shockingly good and the whole handheld vibe makes way more sense. But if your plan is AAA shooters and heavy games, I’m telling you straight: look elsewhere, or at least temper expectations. The real “fix” is installing Bazzite/SteamOS—this single change cleans up a lot of the jank, makes sleep more reliable, and turns the experience into something way more console-like. My recommendation is simple: only buy the Xbox Ally if the price is right—and only after you do that install.
