Today I review the R-10 "Hot Rod" ribbon mic. The R-10 was initially known as the R-10 Hot Rod 25th Anniversary limited edition model, created specifically for Royer Labs 25th anniversary. Initially meant to be a temporary product, it has since become a permanent addition to their catalog as the 'R-10 Hot Rod'. Its success led to a TEC Award nomination, prompting Royer Labs to continue its production. Now, it is a staple in the company's regular lineup of ribbon microphones. The R-10 Hot Rod is an enhanced version of the popular R-10, featuring a custom transformer that increases output by 5dB for a punchier sound with more low-midrange focus. The mic showcases a stylish black-accented trim package and excels in handling high SPLs, thanks to its shock-mounted ribbon transducer and 3-layer windscreen system. The R-10 Hot Rod maintains lowered proximity effect, making it great for close miking instruments and vocals. It includes a 5-year warranty with the first re-ribbon free. Hand-built in Burbank, CA, the mic's compact size and mounting system allow flexible positioning. The ribbon element is designed using a patented process for better noise rejection, and the built-in windscreen protects against air blasts and plosives. The open grill design minimizes standing waves and comb-filtering effects, offering smooth frequency response and phase linearity with no self-distortion. Ideal for digital recording and live sound applications.
