How to Prevent Back Injuries

Brad Tedder has been a physical therapist assistant for over 15 years at Foothills Sports Medicine Physical Therapy. He also teaches at the Ballet School of Arizona. Today, Brad shows us how to prevent back injuries. No matter how big, small, heavy or light an object may be, always use proper body mechanics when lifting ANYTHING! Start by standing with a wide base that is hip to shoulder-width apart. Bend at your knees (not at your waist) and keep the object you are lifting as close to you as possible. Try to keep your abdomen tight. Note: this is not holding your breath. We don’t want you to pass out. Next, is the lifting phase of the movement which involves using your legs, not the muscles of your back. The final step is to maintain an upright position and not let your back move into an unnatural position.
