A Small Flow Saves Fish!

Father Fish explains the importance of water movement/flow in a fish tank and how it affects overall aquarium health. Without proper circulation, dead zones can form where oxygen levels drop and carbon dioxide (CO2) builds up, making it difficult for fish, plants, and beneficial organisms to survive. Aquariums maintain their healthy oxygen levels thru a process called oxygen exchange. Surface agitation is essential for oxygen exchange. This is where oxygen dissolves into the water and CO2 goes into the atmosphere. Father Fish teaches that an even gentle flow, which is created by fish activity, light-driven temperature changes, or equipment like a sponge filter or hang-on-back filter, is enough to maintain a balanced ecosystem. Lou Foxwell adopted the role of Father Fish many years ago when he opened a tropical fish store as a retirement business. Prior to this, he served as a missionary for 25 years, following in his father's footsteps by ministering to a congregation of deaf worshipers. Lou fondly recalls his grandmother from Berlin, Germany, who inspired his love for fish keeping as a child. As a founder and original board member of the National Aquarium, Lou played a significant role in its development, serving as chair of the Community Relations Committee and participating in hiring the first Director of the Aquarium.
