Music, Socials & Merchandise: linktr.ee/ethanrussellmusic At approximately 47 miles long, the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, AKA Pine Creek Gorge, extends along Route 6 in Tioga and Potter Counties. In 1968, a 12-mile section of the gorge was designated a national landmark by the US National Park Service, where 2 state parks had been established. Leonard Harrison State Park on the East side, and Colton Point State Park on the West. At 1400 feet deep, a mile wide, and encompassing nearly 165,000 acres, the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon certainly lives up to her name. Leonard Harrison State Park was established in 1922 when the park’s namesake, Leonard Harrison, donated his 121 acres known as “The Lookout” on the East side of the gorge. Harrison operated a small saw mill in the 1890’s, and after it burned down, he recognized the area’s potential for tourism. The park is filled with waterfalls and epic vistas that visitors can access via the Overlook Trail and the famous Turkey Path. Nestled on the east bank of Pine Creek Gorge is Colton Point State Park. Named after the famous lumberman of the late 19th century, Henry Colton, the park is adorned by the rustic charm of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) era of the 1930s. The CCC was an integral part of many of the parks we know and love today. From 1933 to 1942, the CCC supplied jobs to over 3 million young men to conserve natural resources under FDR’s New Deal. And of course it was problematic. It was heavily segregated, and the work was long and grueling, but they built over 125,000 miles of roads and trails that established national and state parks, which laid the foundation of modern environmental management. So, my fellow granola girlies, did you thank the CCC today? The nearby historic county seat of Wellsboro is famous for its preserved 19th-century charm—with Victorian gas street lamps and one of the last family-owned department stores in the country. The town was established in 1806 and was historically involved in lumber, mining, and glassmaking, specifically light bulbs and radio tubes. Now it’s basically one of those cool old school towns that the gays have taken over, and now everything is a fun boutique or a cool coffee shop. I hope you enjoy watching this video just as much as I did making it!
