From Kitchen to Garden: Easiest Way to Grow Ginger & Waterleaf How to grow ginger root from store bought ginger in containers. Ginger is a tropical plant that is easy to grow indoors. All you need is a piece of fresh ginger, some water and some soil to get the plant growing. Look for nice, big, healthy pieces of ginger with eyes. Eyes show it's ready for shooting. Soak the ginger in water for at most 24 hours. Then divide the ginger root into smaller pieces and plant in compost. Ginger doesn't need to be planted deep. Water and it is not unusual for ginger to take it's time, so be patient. Avoid cold, wind or drafts at all costs and transplant the ginger in garden once the weather warms up. The growing tips at the end of each 'finger' of the rhizome will sprout quickly. Long, slim leaves will grow from the end, which look much like sprouting grass. To plant rooted stems, evenly spread compost in a container, water the compost and plant the stems.
