About This Video

Hey there—welcome. In this video I walk you through deploying a real Spring Boot application to Heroku, and not just a “hello world” app. I take a simple REST API (users endpoint) built with Spring Web + Spring Data JPA and Postgres, show you how it works locally with Postman, and then we move it to the cloud so you can actually see data being created and fetched from a Heroku-hosted database. I first explain what Heroku is: a Platform as a Service (PaaS) that lets you deploy, manage, and scale apps without worrying about servers, infrastructure, or heavy DevOps. Then we do the deployment live using the Heroku CLI: initialize git, login, create the Heroku app, add the Heroku Postgres add-on, and update application properties to use Heroku’s injected environment variables (JDBC_DATABASE_URL, JDBC_DATABASE_USERNAME, JDBC_DATABASE_PASSWORD). We also hit a common issue—Java 24 not supported—so I fix it by switching to Java 21 and redeploy. By the end, you’ll have a working Heroku URL, you’ll test the endpoints against the live app, and you’ll understand the exact commands and configuration you need to deploy Spring Boot with a database on Heroku.
