Building A Plywood End Grain Desktop...Until Disaster Struck!

Did I ruin my very first wooden inlay on this Baltic Birch plywood desk? Should I have not run it through the planer? Should I have never changed the planer blades? Was I trying too much to do something too cool? Was I in over my head? I tried a test piece on the planer and it worked great! But the inlay on the actual plywood desktop did not go so well. Either way, it is what it is and Amy says she likes it. I guess that's all that matters right? But there is a big part of me that is super disappointed. If I had to do it all over again I would get it right, I know it! Tell me what you think? Is this inlay of the desktop to be thrown out or should we keep it? Now I have to work on the bottom (legs)! I have an original design....(at least I think it is) and that video is coming out soon.
