Is Top Tier fuel actually important, or is it just marketing hype? In this video, I break down the real truth about fuel quality, ethanol, and how it directly impacts modern direct-injection engines, especially in trucks like the Chevy Colorado 2.7 Turbo. There’s a lot of misinformation online when it comes to fuel brands, ethanol content, and whether “pure gas” is actually better. I’ve owned and driven multiple direct-injection vehicles, including turbocharged platforms, and in this video I share real-world experience, not just theory. In this video, we cover: -What Top Tier fuel actually means (and what it doesn’t) -Why brand names like Shell, Chevron, BP don’t always matter -The truth about 10%–15% ethanol in modern engines -How direct injection works and why it’s louder -Carbon buildup, valve deposits, and why port injection matters -Why some engines require walnut blasting over time -What happens if you don’t run Top Tier fuel consistently -Fuel additives that actually make sense (and which ones don’t) -Why “100% gas” isn’t automatically better -How to find Top Tier gas stations near you -Long-term ownership considerations for the Colorado 2.7L Turbo I also walk through my own truck at nearly 20,000 miles, discuss fuel additives I’ve chosen to use, and explain what you can do if Top Tier fuel isn’t readily available in your area. -This video is especially helpful if you own: A Chevy Colorado or Canyon Any direct-injection or turbocharged vehicle A modern truck you plan to keep long-term 🔗 Top Tier Fuel Station Finder: https://stationfinder.toptiergas.com If you found this helpful and want to see more real-world ownership content, installs, maintenance discussions, and towing videos with the Colorado (plus Mustang content coming soon), consider subscribing and dropping a comment. About This Video

In this video I break down the whole “Top Tier fuel” debate and why cheap gas (or just inconsistent fuel quality) can bite you long-term—especially if you’re driving a modern direct-injection turbo truck like my Colorado 2.7 TurboMax. There’s a ton of misinformation online about Shell/Chevron/BP, “pure gas,” and ethanol, so I wanted to talk through what actually matters, what doesn’t, and what I’ve seen from owning multiple direct-injection vehicles (including turbo platforms). I also explain why direct injection is louder (high-pressure fuel pump noise is normal), why carbon buildup on the back of the valves is a real concern on DI-only engines, and why port injection helps (my Mustang has DI + port, so it’s a different situation). I’m coming up on 20,000 miles, and since Top Tier stations aren’t super common where I live in Southwest Virginia/East Tennessee, I show what I’m doing to be more preventative—like running a mild cleaner (Chevron Techron) and trying to be more consistent with Top Tier fuel. Big takeaway: 100% gas does not automatically equal “better,” and on turbo vehicles you actually want ethanol for the cooling benefit. If you’re planning to keep a Colorado 2.7L long-term, you need to treat it like a high-compression, high-boost turbo four-cylinder—good fuel, regular oil changes, and realistic expectations.
