Learn SPSS from scratch in just 10 minutes using a survey dataset. This tutorial covers data entry, Cronbach’s Alpha, t-tests, and ANOVA. Perfect for thesis, dissertation, research papers and quantitative research. Welcome back to Doctor Square. This is Dr. Muhammad Awais. SPSS remains one of the most widely used tools for quantitative and survey based research across the social sciences, particularly among graduate students and early-career researchers. And after the unexpected success of my 15 minute NVivo tutorial, something remarkable happened: viewers from every corner of the world began reaching out. From graduate students in Africa to PhD scholars across Europe and researchers throughout Southeast Asia, many of you contacted me for one on one sessions and project assistance. Alongside those messages came a common request: “Can you create a beginner friendly SPSS walkthrough in the same style?” So, here we are with a 10 minutes SPSS tutorial with survey example. Before we begin, it is to inform you that I extend an invitation to viewers to reach out via email (mawwaisgill@gmail.com) for personalized one-on-one assistance. In this step-by-step training, we build and analyze a complete sample dataset titled Exploring Academic Stress Among University Students. It’s a simple, imaginary survey created purely for practice, but it offers the full experience of working with SPSS as if you were running your own real-world study. As many of you already know, I provide personal guidance on SPSS, NVivo, and other research tools. If you ever need support with your thesis, dissertation, or data analysis project—quantitative or qualitative—feel free to reach out at the email appearing on your screen. By the end of this video, you will know how to enter your data, define variables, create value labels, compute scales, check reliability with Cronbach’s Alpha, and run the essential tests you can directly report in your academic work. And if you’re new to the channel, don’t forget to subscribe so you never miss future tutorials. What You’ll Learn in This Video Understanding the Dataset We begin with the structure of our practice survey: demographic variables, academic categories, residence type, and the six-item latent construct measuring academic stress. Variable View & Data View Basics Get familiar with SPSS’s two key screens and learn how to set up names, labels, value labels, and measurement levels for each variable. Entering Data in SPSS Watch how we insert all responses—just like a spreadsheet but with the structure needed for statistical analysis. Descriptive Statistics Learn how to view frequencies, modes, and counts for gender, age categories, residence type, and individual stress items. Reliability Analysis (Cronbach’s Alpha) Before combining indicators of academic stress, we test whether the six items consistently measure the same underlying construct. Computing the Academic Stress Scale A complete demonstration of creating a new variable by summing all six indicators into one composite score. Independent Sample t-Test We compare academic stress levels across gender and residence groups to see whether differences are statistically meaningful. One-Way ANOVA Since age has three categories, you’ll learn how to run ANOVA and interpret the results, including post hoc tests. Interpreting Mean Differences & P Values We break down what the numbers actually mean for real research reporting. By the end of this session, you’ll be equipped with the core SPSS skills needed to begin analyzing your own quantitative data. If you ever need personalized assistance with SPSS or NVivo, feel free to email me for one-on-one support.
