In this video, we explore the Four Approaches to Grounded Theory and how they can help researchers develop a deeper understanding of qualitative research. We also delve into the work of Glaser and Strauss, who developed the original grounded theory approach in their 1967 book, "The Discovery of Grounded Theory." This approach emphasizes the fundamentals of grounded theory analysis, including the importance of theoretical sampling, constant comparison, and the development of theoretical concepts. In addition, we discuss Glaser's 1992 book, "Emergence Vs Forcing," which provides an overview of grounded theory analysis, as well as Strauss and Corbin's 1990 book, "Basics of Qualitative Research," which provides a detailed discussion of grounded theory procedures and techniques. We examine Charmaz's 2006 book, "Constructing Grounded Theory," which provides a practical guide to qualitative analysis. This approach teaches researchers how to develop grounded theory concepts, test their theories, and identify relationships between concepts. We discussed Oliver's Critical Realist Grounded Theory approach, which emphasizes abduction over induction. Unlike induction, which seeks to generalize from specific observations, abduction involves using existing knowledge to develop theories that can explain observations. Next, we explore Postmodern GT, which strongly emphasises the situatedness, partialities, and contradictions inherent in qualitative research. As described in the work of Clark (2005) and Kools (2008), Postmodern GT seeks to understand the complex social, cultural, and historical contexts in which research takes place. By embracing the contradictions and partialities that exist within these contexts, researchers can develop a more nuanced and complex understanding of their research subjects. By exploring these four approaches to Grounded Theory, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of qualitative research and develop more nuanced and complex theories to explain their observations.
