The Day My Divers Almost Didn’t Make It Back

On what should have been a routine drift dive in Hawaii, I ended up drifting with six divers… for over an hour… with no boat in sight. This was one of the scariest scuba diving experiences of my life, and it’s a story that still shakes me years later. We had planned for a simple current dive, but when the water pulled us in the wrong direction, everything changed. Surface marker buoys weren’t enough. The boat couldn’t see us. We were truly lost at sea. It took a Nautilus Lifeline distress call, a passing snorkel boat, and even the U.S. Coast Guard to get us out safely. Without that beacon, I know some of my divers wouldn’t have made it back.
