With over 130,000 people living above it, this underground river flows silently below homes, streets, and a local mosque… completely out of sight. This cave dive takes us deep into the karst landscape of Sulawesi, known for its limestone formations, underground rivers, and unexplored cave networks. Guided by local cave divers, we navigate crystal-clear water, haloclines (where fresh and salt water meet), and stunning submerged formations like stalactites and stalagmites. Remnants of a time when this cave was dry. But Lanto Cave is more than just a dive site. For generations, local communities have visited this cave for ritual cleansing, spiritual belief, and tradition. While we explore it as cave divers, following guidelines, installing jump lines, and managing overhead environments, locals see it as a place of meaning, mystery, and cultural significance.
