After spending time around Puerto Rico, we finally made our way to the island’s southwest coast—and it might just be our favorite region yet. From stunning beaches and dramatic coastal hikes to waterfalls, craft beer, and even a surprise Volkswagen festival, this was one packed adventure! We base ourselves in the charming beach town of Boquerón, exploring the colorful streets of El Poblado de Boquerón, the waterfront, local restaurants, and the calm waters of Boquerón Beach. What we didn’t expect was to arrive during a massive Volkswagen gathering featuring classic and modern VWs, vendors, food, and displays throughout town. We also stop in at Boquerón Brewing Co. for some locally crafted beers and a relaxing evening in town. The next day we visit Playa Buye, which many consider one of the best beaches in Puerto Rico—and after seeing the crystal-clear water and long stretch of calm shoreline, it’s easy to understand why. Our Cabo Rojo adventures continue with a hike past the famous Salinas de Cabo Rojo (salt flats), along the dramatic cliffs to Faro de los Morrillos, and down toward Playa Sucia. Along the way we discover the incredible views around Cueva Jagüey Beach, one of the most beautiful coastal areas we’ve seen on the island. To wrap up our southwest Puerto Rico road trip, we head north in search of waterfalls. First is Salto Collazo, an easy roadside stop with beautiful twin waterfalls. Then we visit the popular Cascada Gozalandia, where developed trails, swimming areas, cliff jumping, and a restaurant make it a fantastic day trip destination.
