Day 7 through Day 9 on the Ouachita Trail is basically the “final push” part of the thru-hike—big miles, a little bit of suffering, and a whole lot of determination. I start Day 7 early and immediately deal with a creek crossing that I’m not totally confident about (and yeah… I had to do it three times). From there it’s about pounding out miles, grabbing views like Flatside Pinnacle, and taking advantage of shelters when they show up—benches, picnic tables, and a place to actually sit down and breathe for a minute. I also talk about what goes on in your head on long trails—whether you’re a podcast person, music person, or just stuck in your own thoughts like I usually am. Day 8 is cruisier mileage-wise, with Maumelle Lake finally showing up, plus burn scars and some of the iconic “weird trail stuff” like the giant sawdust piles. I push a little farther than planned to set up an easy finish, then it’s an early start on the last morning with 7–9 miles left to the eastern terminus at Pinnacle Mountain State Park.
