About This Video

I put over 200 hours into Crimson Desert and I’m still calling this “first impressions” because that’s honestly what it feels like: I’ve only cleared about half the main story and explored maybe a fifth of the map. Most of my time disappeared into wandering Pywel, getting sidetracked by encampments I had no business taking, chasing gear I saw in community clips, and losing entire sessions to jumping puzzles that humbled me on a personal level. The core point I keep coming back to is scale—not “big map” scale, but the sensation of being small inside something vast, indifferent, and geologically real. Visually, Pearl Abyss commits to a world that behaves like a world: real darkness, real weather, and yes, real gray days that some players hate. That conviction extends into the open-world philosophy—no curated checklist, no Ubisoft-style predictability, and a drip-feed of secrets and mechanics that still surprises me 200 hours in. Combat is the destination: a decade of Black Desert Online’s action combat language, now unrestrained, expressive, and deep enough to feel like a fighting game embedded in an open world. The tradeoff is friction. Systems are inconvenient on purpose, performance can dip, and the early story is messy enough that the CEO apologized. But culturally and mechanically, I think Pearl Abyss built something that will be discussed for years—especially with a modding scene already cracking proprietary formats and reshaping the experience in real time.
