Ohio is becoming the first state to partner with the Justice Department’s new National Fraud Enforcement Division as federal officials build a prosecutor-led national fraud detection center designed to break down information silos and expose taxpayer fraud. In my exclusive interview with Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald, we discussed why the Justice Department launched its inaugural state partnership roundtable in Ohio, how data sharing could help investigators identify fraudsters who target multiple government programs, and why other states should join the effort. McDonald said the goal is not only to prosecute fraud but also to deter it. “I want fraudsters worried about six o’clock in the morning,” McDonald said. We also discussed taxpayer frustration over the lack of transparency surrounding government spending, the consequences of agencies withholding records, and the need for a nationwide response to fraud. McDonald said the Justice Department has announced more than 550 major fraud takedowns, arrests, convictions, and sentences across the United States in approximately 64 days.
