Mistake born in 2000. MkLeo born in 2001. Captain Zack born in 2001. Lima born in 2001. SDX born in 2002. They're only getting younger! As time goes on, we rarely see older "veteran" players make great leaps in rank. What we see more often is new players consistently climbing until a breakout performance. For example, SDX's victory at one of Smash 4's final hoorah tournaments: Canada Cup 2018. These new exceptional players are typically much younger, for two reasons. The first being that older people in general have already selected their hobby of choice. Most people do not venture in new hobbies at older ages. The second being that younger players learn faster. There is a natural explanation for this, that reverts back to adolescence and learning language. Humans are much better at learning language at a very early age. This is because they are in a state of *inferiority*. They depend on their parents for survival, and are extremely dependent and cognizant. Their minds are working much harder to unravel the communications of a parent because they are dependent on them for survival. Of course, in the realm of fighting games, you are not dependent on anyone for your human survival, but when you are a total newcomer, you still hold a state of inferiority and dependence. You are dependent on those around you to learn from to be able to be accepted and make it in that world. On the other hand, veteran players who heavily tend not to leap in rank hold a sense of *superiority*. Sure they may believe they must still learn from others, but they unconsciously close their mind to a way of understanding you could only achieve in a state of dependence. It is truly quite astounding. It is the difference between studying a language to understand it, and depending on someone's language to make it in life. I urge you to read Robert Greene's book "Mastery" and the anecdote of the many historians who attempted to understand a tribe's foreign language. It was only until the historian who took an alternative approach by living in their culture, who finally "cracked the code".
