WiFi is the absolute most overlooked piece to the success of 95% of top players. Almost as if it was intentionally kept a secret. Not only could you have seen the most dominating Smash 4 players at the top of the Brawl WiFi ladder years ago, but you can be sure the new wave of top Smash 4 players first took over our time's SmashLadder. Any exceptional new wave Melee players will be found at the top of Melee Net-play nowadays too. Immediately, most will attribute this success toward the frequency of playing, so they don't find it worth noting. Since you can play anyone at anytime form the convenience of your own room, you will be able to get as much practice as you want and become the best... right? Well, that just isn't the case. Frequency of playing just does NOT equal increased skill. This is clear in competitive Melee, where old school players are clearly susceptible to losing to players whom they have 3, 4, or even 5 years of practice ahead of them. Furthermore, Brawl WiFi was HORRENDOUS. You weren't even playing real games this way. As such, I attribute this success to mindset. If you are familiar with my content, this will resonate with you. Remember, time practiced does not equal skill, but that value you gain from your practice is what matters. The mindset you have when playing WiFi is one that is extremely valuable for learning. By playing online, you are inadvertently more likely to follow the two laws of salt. If you missed my video on that, please refer to it here: https://youtu.be/GtLTiJjjQO4. Essentially, there are no external pressures blocking your mind from trying to improve. Players tend to unconsciously begin to care more to win than to improve in a real life setting. Additionally, there are lesser internal pressures, as you don't desire specific wins or a regional ranking, though an unhealthy desire to achieve a ladder ranking can quickly negate this mindset focused on improvement rather than winning. You can also take time yourself to think over a match, and get past your salt, if you have any. In this way, you are likely to gain much more from WiFi play, than offline.
