About This Video

In this video I break down the real differences between red teaming and blue teaming in cybersecurity, because I know you’ve probably Googled it before. In simple terms: red team is attacking and blue team is defending. I walk through what red teamers actually do—penetration tests that can be physical or technical, working inside a defined scope so nobody takes down production in the middle of the day. They scan networks, find vulnerabilities, attempt exploitation over a 1–3 week window, then document everything and hand over mitigation guidance. Then I switch to blue teaming, which is the side I’m on. Blue team is the day-to-day defense: SOC analyst, security engineer, cloud engineer—monitoring systems, responding to incidents, and deploying tools like firewalls, email security, EDR, and VPNs. I’m also honest about the reality: it’s not “easy mode,” because the company depends on you to protect their data, but the upside is defensive roles make up most of the job market. To help you get job-ready, I recommend specific Coursera options: EC-Council Ethical Hacking Essentials for red team fundamentals, and for blue team I point you to the Microsoft Cybersecurity Analyst Professional Certificate plus the ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity specialization to build the core skills that hiring managers actually look for.
