What’s going on guys— in this video I break down what I honestly think is the best beginner certification if you’re trying to get into cybersecurity: the Google Cybersecurity Certificate on Coursera. Before I even get into the cert, I talk about the real question people ask me all the time: do you actually need certifications? I’m kind of torn—if you’re in your first 5 years, I think certs matter because they show employers you’ve got hands-on knowledge you can’t fully prove without experience yet. If you’ve got 5, 10, 15+ years in the game, they matter a lot less because your foundation is already built. The reason I like the Google cert for beginners is simple: it’s well-rounded and it jumps right into the important stuff with less fluff. You learn how to mitigate attacks, how to operate like a cybersecurity analyst, and how to identify risks, threats, and vulnerabilities. You also get exposure to tools that actually show up in the real world—Linux, SQL, a SIEM (single pane of glass for logs), and even some Python for basic scripting and automation. My biggest takeaway: start with Google, then level up to Security+ after, because Security+ is the next tier once you’ve got that baseline.
