Recently I’ve been trying sonible smart:comp 3, and in this video I break down five features that genuinely impressed me—especially for home studio mixing where you want pro results without overthinking every knob. I start with the “it depends” reality of compression: the best settings for vocals change depending on how dynamic the performance is and what outcome you actually want. smart:comp 3 tackles that by letting me analyze the source (I used female vocals) and generate tailored threshold, ratio, attack, and release settings, then steer the sound using the new Matrix View—dense, punchy, dynamic, and snappy—so I’m thinking in terms of results, not just numbers. From there I go deeper into the Style tab, where things get really flexible. I can dial in saturation and character, but the standout for me is the timing control: attack and release curves, plus attack hold and release hold, which you don’t often see in this much detail. I also show Input Riding, which acts like a fader to even out inconsistent passages before the compressor has to work hard—often a more natural solution than forcing compression to fix level problems. Finally, I demonstrate spectral compression for frequency-based “micro” control (great for clarity and tone shaping), and the Group workflow that lets me batch-adjust settings across multiple drum tracks without constantly opening and closing plugins.
